Transforming RBS 'could create 50,000 green jobs'

Turning the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) into a Green Investment Bank could create thousands of green jobs.
Pressure group PLATFORM and anti-poverty campaigner World Development Movement commissioned a report by former PricewaterhouseCoopers consultant James Leaton, which stated that 50,000 green jobs could be created by such a move.
James Leaton argues: "The government needs to
set an example with RBS of how expertise in project finance, renewables and small to medium-sized enterprises can contribute green jobs and infrastructure for the UK and beyond."
He added that creating the green jobs would boost the UK's economy, as well as helping to reduce the country's carbon emissions to achieve the energy targets set by the European Union.
Earlier this month, the European Commission announced that it is to offer 250 million (£209 million) for more than 200 new green projects, as part of the LIFE+ programme, which is scheduled to run from 2007 to 2013.
